Why DNS?
A web browser uses IP addresses to connect to websites, but we usually know websites by their domain names. Entering an IP address in the address bar can be inconvenient. A website's IP address can change at any time, and a website can have multiple IP addresses. DNS (the Domain Name System) translates domain names into IP addresses. Your device sends a query to a DNS server to find the IP address associated with a domain name.
Your operating system (Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, etc.) usually has one or more DNS servers configured. These are generally provided by your ISP, which can pose a privacy problem.
What is a DNS leak?
When your PC or another device connects to a VPN, it should use the VPN's DNS servers. However, some VPNs leave all or some of your DNS settings unchanged, so your device may continue to use your ISP's DNS servers. Why is this a privacy concern? Your ISP can see the domain names you look up, even while you are connected to a VPN.
How does the DNS leak test work?
When you click the Start test button, bash.ws generates random subdomain names, such as lala.blabla.bash.ws, to avoid DNS caching. Your browser attempts to load resources from these subdomains and must first resolve their IP addresses using its configured DNS servers. bash.ws receives these DNS queries and displays the IP addresses of the servers that sent them. If a server belongs to your ISP or another company you do not trust, this may indicate a privacy concern, and the test will warn you.
Does the DNS leak test support OpenVPN?
Yes. The test works regardless of the VPN software or protocol you use, including OpenVPN, IKEv1, IKEv2, L2TP, IPsec, and PPTP.

Yes. You can use it on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, or Linux. The test does not depend on your operating system. All you need is a web browser.
